A Prescription for Productivity

Employees are no longer functioning at peak performance in the modern workplace, reported best-selling author and performance expert Tony Schwartz. To help managers and employees, he developed a diagnostic tool, “The Energy Audit,” which measures how individuals are coping in their work environments. 

Schwartz discovered that most workers struggle with significant energy deficits. How would you fare in such a study? Answer these questions to find out: 

1. Do you regularly get seven to eight hours of sleep? 

Schwartz’s audits reveal that although most individuals require seven to eight hours of sleep, 61 percent of respondents get far less than that. “People think that sacrificing one hour of sleep will give them an additional hour of productivity,” says Schwartz. But he found that sleep deprivation leads to significant cognitive deficits that undermine performance.
