How to guard your credibility

Here’s one way: Don’t use cutesy job titles like “ninja.” People make snap judgments. While it’s true that job titles like director, vice president and chairman may sound boring, they do convey a certain level of skill and authority. Nobody is left wondering what you do.

The opposite of boring is ridiculous. It’s fine if people call you a guru, but putting it on your business card undermines your status with paying customers. Same goes for lengthy signature blocks and funky email addresses.

Don’t go there. You’ll thank us.
