The owners of several Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises in North Carolina have agreed to settle a religious discrimination charge leveled by a former employee who claimed that wearing pants violated her Pentecostal beliefs.
The previous owner of the restaurant where the woman worked had honored her request, but when Scottish Food Systems and Laurinburg KFC Take Home took over, they insisted she wear pants. When she refused, they fired her.
She filed a religious discrimination complaint with the EEOC, which attempted to resolve the matter through its conciliation process. When those efforts failed, the commission filed suit on the woman’s behalf.
Under the three-year consent decree, the employers will pay the woman $40,000. They must also train their personnel about religious discrimination issues and post their nondiscrimination policy in the stores.
