Q. Recently, one of our delivery drivers was hurt at home and is now unable to drive. Should we offer alternative employment?
A. Is he able to work in a job that does not involve driving? Are his injuries temporary? You should have a discussion with him about his limitations and the available options.
If there is another job that he is able and qualified to perform, you should consider placing him in that position, either temporarily until he becomes able to drive or long-term if he is indefinitely unable to drive.
If he needs time to recover at home, you may need to offer leave as a reasonable accommodation and you may be required to bring him back to work after he has recovered, provided that it is not an undue hardship to allow him to be out beyond a certain period of time.
Also, if you have a light-duty program for employees injured at work, you may have to offer him a light-duty position while he recovers.
