A Commonwealth Court has ruled that a veteran professional chicken catcher’s bad attitude was reason enough to deny him unemployment benefits. The man was fired from his job of five years with B&B Catching Services in Northumberland County for persistently squawking about what he perceived as a stingy 2012 holiday bonus.
The court said that was willful misconduct, which made him ineligible for benefits.
Chicken catchers gather up birds from chicken houses and load them into trucks bound for processing plants.
The man’s beef with B&B Catching Services began when the firm announced that 2012 year-end bonuses wouldn’t be as big as in previous years. He repeatedly voiced his displeasure, which led to a demotion from his crew chief position. Apparently, that didn’t improve his mood; he subsequently destroyed a company gas card and stepped up his disparagement of the company when speaking to co-workers.
Eventually, the ax fell.
He applied for unemployment benefits, which B&B successfully contested. That’s when the man appealed to the Commonwealth Court—which also decided his story wouldn’t fly.
