Q. Can my wife and I both claim a home office deduction for the same space? N.R., Chester, N.J.
A. No. To qualify for home office deductions, the space must be used regularly and exclusively for business purposes. If you’re both using the same space, neither one of you meets the “exclusivity” part of the test for your respective business.
However, if you divide the space and otherwise meet the tax law requirements, both of you may qualify for home office deductions for the separate spaces used for your respective businesses.
