Office gossip can be a good thing

Integrating into your workgroup is just as important as being good at your job. Part of that is getting in on conversations and knowing about office gossip.

Certified life and career coach Dorothy Tannahill-Moran explains three things you need to know:

  1. People together = politics. Be aware of the informal leaders, who have influence and who flip-flop between being loved and hated.
  2. Be friendly with the alpha. Having access to their sheer wealth of information and influence is a definite positive. There’s no need to exploit or take advantage, but being on good terms with the focal point of your workforce’s sphere puts you in a positive social position.
  3. Learn how things work. You don’t have to say something that could damage other people. Think of it as building relationships and finding out the informal process.
