4-point checklist clarifies open enrollment

With key pieces of health care reform going into effect, employers that offer health benefits have even more to consider when implementing this year’s open enrollment.

Make the most of your annual benefits sign-up by following this checklist.

“Strategic communication will be an essential component of any successful 2014 open enrollment program,” said Suzanne Nolan, who advises on benefits messaging for Mercer, the HR consulting firm that compiled the checklist.

♦ Communicate the impact of health care reform. Employees are already confused and expecting the worst; 41% believe their situations will be worse off with health care reform. Communicate early and often to reduce fears, clarify misperceptions and help employees make smart benefits decisions.

Promote wellness initiatives. A targeted communications strategy can significantly boost wellness program participation. Among large employers that have measured the results of their wellness initiatives, more than 75% said their health management programs had a positive impact on their medical plan trends.  

Use online and mobile technology to deliver information and tools. Employees look for authoritative information on their computers and phones. Ensure that benefits-related content works just as well on smartphones as it does on computers.

Empower workers to become informed consumers. Even if your benefits aren’t changing much this year, give employees access to educational resources to help them navigate today’s complicated health care landscape—and better understand the value of the benefits you offer.
