As director of online operations for Facebook India, Kirthiga Reddy is all mobile all the time.
When she led Facebook’s explosion onto the Indian market from 2010 through 2012, Reddy grew the social network from 8 million to 71 million users. That’s especially impressive because only a tenth of India’s 1.2 billion people are wired.
But now the next tech revolution is under way, from desktops to mobile phones.
“Sometimes they never get to the desktop at all,” Reddy says.
This led to “Facebook for Every Phone,” an app that lets cheaper phones—not just smartphones—access Facebook, as well as Messenger, which lets users bypass texting and phone charges entirely.
Last year, a turmeric farmer used Messenger to rally other farmers and stop falling prices for the spice.
