A president, not a king

It may be apocryphal, but it is said that at the end of the Revolutionary War, England’s King George III asked an American, Benjamin West, about George Washington’s plans.

“They say he will return to his farm,” West replied. “If he does,” the incredulous king remarked, “he will be the greatest man in the world.” That’s exactly what Washington did—once after the revolution and again after his presidency.
