Imagine it. Robert Lefkowitz, who won the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry, had dreamed of practicing medicine. But during a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health ending in 1970, he got hooked on research. He isolated eight common receptors regulating the body’s fight-or-flight response.
