If Congress doesn’t act, a tax break for hiring qualified veterans will vanish.
Under the “VOW” (Veterans Opportunity to Work) to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, an employer can claim a credit as high as $9,600 ($6,240 for new hires by nonprofits). The exact amount of the credit depends on several factors, including the length of unemployment before hire, the number of hours worked and first-year wages. It only applies to hirings made before Jan. 1, 2013.
