Cross-training helps trades understand one another

One of the biggest problems for an organization that employs contractors with specialties ranging from drywall to masonry is making sure they all get along.

So Washington, D.C.-based Man­ganaro Midatlantic, a subcontracting company, is cross-training its tradesmen so each one understands the challenges the others have on the job.

The firm requires drywall and masonry project managers working on the same job to spend time together and to communicate regularly so they can better coordinate their crews’ schedules and projects. And as drywallers learn how to do masonry work—and vice versa—managers are running into fewer delays by one subcontractor that can prevent the other from completing work on time.

By the end of next year, every worker at every level of the company (except for a few highly skilled craftsmen) will be cross-trained through the organization’s “One Voice, One Team” program. And a single field manager will oversee all aspects of the work, replacing the skill-specific array of managers who now supervise each job site.
