Ted Doudak, president of Riva Jewelry Manufacturing in Long Island, was forced to testify in court whether he believes homosexuality is a sin against God, and gays and lesbians are doomed to eternal damnation. The former employee who brought the lawsuit claims he was fired a day after telling Doudak that the employee’s daughter is a lesbian and the employee is gay.
He also claims that Doudak frequently quoted the Bible at work and said gays and lesbians were “repulsive.”
Doudak’s lawyer argued that forcing Doudak to answer the court’s questions would violate his First Amendment rights. But Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Carol Edmead ordered Doudak to answer, saying religious freedoms cannot be used “as a cloak for acts of discrimination.”
Hostile comments in the workplace can quickly add up to discriminatory animus, particularly when makes them. When firing follows those comments, the results will almost certainly be disastrous.
