A former manager of a Bank of America branch in New York is suing, claiming the bank has a discriminatory policy of placing black managers only in predominantly poor, black neighborhoods.
Jack Mitchell’s lawsuit alleges the bank repeatedly assigned him to branches in minority neighborhoods because it believes white customers don’t want to be served by black employees.
Mitchell is black. His lawsuit refers to the culture he encountered at Bank of America from February 2007 to July 2008 as its own type of “apartheid.”
Because managers’ compensation is, in part, driven by how profitable their branches are, Mitchell claims placing black managers in poorer neighborhoods is discriminatory. His suit seeks $10 million in damages.
