Incentives for health assessment get employees into wellness

To help create a culture of wellness, the Pepsi Bottling Group in Somers, NY, offered employees who participated in a health assessment a MasterCard prepaid with $75. The incentive worked: 70% of 33,500 U.S. employees participated.
    After the assessment, the company’s Healthy Living program identified employees who needed help to get healthy or manage disease. It offered $100 to those who attended wellness classes for smoking cessation, diabetes management, high-risk maternity or depression.
    The company has 18 on-site clinics at its U.S. locations and plans to open 30 in the next couple of years. Doctors at the clinics treat sick workers, perform physicals and refer patients to specialists. The clinics pay off, says David Kasiarz, vice president of compensation, benefits and risk management. For every $1 the company invests, it sees a $1.50 to $2 return.
    Plus, healthy employees are more productive, he says.
    “The next generation of health care for employees is to improve health, not reduce benefits,” Kasiarz says.
