Advice about building your “personal brand” can be confusing to some people. But it needn’t be. Simply keep this in mind: Your personal brand is ultimately about maintaining a consistent, professional presence online—on LinkedIn, Twit­­ter, Facebook and blogs—and in the real world.

“Keep your own personal drama out of the workplace and out of your public online presence,” Steve Tobak, a managing partner at Invisor Consulting, tells CBS Moneywatch.

“Companies do not hire or promote personal brands,” he adds. They hire capable people.

Take care of your professional reputation, and your personal brand should take care of itself.
