Annual meeting inspires, while skirting business talk

The 100-plus senior managers who attend the annual meeting of nationwide retirement community firm Aegis Living talk about everything except business.

Instead, they listen to inspirational speakers and celebrities, whose identities are not revealed until the guests are introduced at the meeting. Past speakers and performers have included Ted Kennedy Jr., Carlos Santana and Harry Belafonte.

The conference is designed to be inspirational, emotional and personal.

Founder and CEO Dwayne Clark calls the meeting “a major investment” that gives “something meaningful and truly out of the ordinary to my devoted staff.” In return, he says, employees “know they are cared for.”

Annual meeting attendees are responsible for taking the message back to the 1,900 Aegis employees who don’t attend.

Result: Redmond, Wash.-based Aegis Living has the lowest staff turnover rate in the industry, Clark says.
