It’s a new year–did you get a raise? How?

Question:  “I’ve been at my job a little over a year and have been told performance reviews will be coming up 'sometime soon.'  I want to be prepared and would appreciate advice. Since the economy is so bad, I’m curious if any of you are receiving raises?  Who brought it up—you or your boss? How do you know how much to ask for? Should I accept the offer or try to negotiate? I’d like to stay in this position—I’m still learning things and taking on more tasks, but I’m only making ends meet.  I’m not job hunting; does that take away my leverage?"  –I’d like a raise

I have been working for my current job for 4 years now. I USED to love coming to work everyday. It was a casual and friendly enviroment with no complaints. Now it is going on the 6th year that none of the employees have received a raise. They offer no incentives actually they took them all away. It is a hostile enviroment and employees are unhappy. Please don’t get me wrong I am DEFINITELY THANKFUL for my job, but being a single mother, 3 kids, now summer break, gas prices a little cheaper now (althought it still costs me $140.00 a week in gas for the travel) it can get very hard. It is almost like they want people to quit so they won’t have to pay unemployment and the turn around has increased drastically. I want to work, but for me it would be cheaper to greet patients and work part-time close to home instead 30 miles away from home as a claims adjuster. Balance it out, it will basically be the same….

Is it good to ask for a raise in a bad economy? Yes, I do think so – however, its important to evaluate your company culture right now to see if it is a possibility for them to offer someone a raise. I work for a non-profit and for a few years, they let us know that they could not afford to raise our salaries — merit or cost of living. When they could afford to reintroduce it, they gave us a range, based on merit, that they could afford to pay each employee, but the employee needed to make their case! Consequently, I’ve become very good at keeping a file on all extraordinary activities/work I undertake throughout the year. I need to keep it in perspective though — there still may be years that my hard work may not yield a raise, but it’s better to prepare and keep your supervisors informed of your contributions. I thnk hanging in there if you work for a good company, love your job, is important to do when times are down and things are tough.0

I’ve worked for this company going on 6 years, there has not been a year that I did not get a raise. It has been substantial each year. I believe they use some type of formulas to determine what the increase will be but I’m not sure. As for your performance review for the past 4 years I have taken in my own self assessment of my year. It is includes by month every thing I have done: classes/seminar/webinars, volunteerism for the company, any company training ie new software, etc. I include the benefit of each item using this scale: 1.Learn Something New 2. Use Current strengths for development 3. Improve on a development need 4. Transfer knowledge So an example would be: Meeting for Central Supply Room Reps(1, 2, 3) Then I write a summary of how I thought the year went and I’ll point out some specifics, ie this year I got called out a couple of times on one of my task. I came up with a solution as to how to rectify the situation so I mentioned that…here was a problem but now I’m doing this so it should eliminate that problem and so far it’s going well. Hope this helps. I also make sure a copy gets into my HR folder.0

I am in the private education sector. We have seen raises that are just a bit above COLA…in the 3-4% range. I hear the frustration for Overjoy, but in this economy, we are all dispensable. I am grateful each day for a healthy work environment and the fact I have a job. This economy is going to be tight for a few more years so finding balance in the work place is vital for good mental health. That includes taking your lunch break even if it is to go outside and take in some fresh air and get away from the phone. If your company cannot provide addition increases in salary, see if you can work with your administrator on comp time, more flexible hours, etc. There is always a way to compensate a hard worker, that is where the negotiations should lie in this economy.0

I’ve been in the Admin field for 11 years and have been at this company for 5 years, there hasn’t been a year that I didn’t get a raise. I just had my performance review and was informed that I received an above average increase. I have never negotiated any of the raises I have received, just accepted with gratitude. This is also the first year that we are receiving bonuses based on corporate and personal goals.

Every year I do a self assessment and bring it with me to my performance review. Since my boss doesn’t know everything I do, it helps bring him up to speed on my duties.

@AdminAmy – I work in the supplemental insurance industry. No, our company is not thriving, but they have internally said that they appreciate us and hope to keep the group that is here.

I would be interested to know what industry everyone works in. I have been in my current position in the healthcare industry for 9 months and have not seen an increase.

There have been no raises for the past four years and we have been notified that there will not be one this year either.

We do not get merit raises–or at least they are very rare. I’ve gotten ONE in my ten years with my company.

This year, we got LESS than COL, and they call that our COL raise. It’s something, I guess.

We would all like a raise – who wouldn’t like more money, but this day’s ecomony and SO MANY people without jobs, I would say…be glad you have a job and wait until the economy gets better, and I am sure you will be well compensated for your hard work. I wouldn’t give up on doing the “good things” such as showing up early or working through lunch, I am sure it won’t go unnoticed. I would call it just being professional. Good Luck!

I did not get a raise this year, but I recieved a generous bonus and contribution to my retirement. I am grateful in this environment to have a job and especially happy to be rewarded so generously.

I am a state government employee, so all of our salaries are public information and posted to the web. In other words, we can see and keep tabs on who is or is not receiving raises and how much. What’s frustrating here is that no matter how hard you work your fingers to the bone, each admin receives the exact same raise (3% last year). I have personally cut back on my work contribution … used to arrive really early in the AM and sometimes work through lunch or stay a little past 5. No more of that! I’m glad to have a job, but it’s a bum deal to not be rewarded for honest hard work.

Yes, I received a “cost-of-living” increase of 2.49% (much lower than want I’ve received in the past 5 years that I’ve been at my current job).

Because I work for city govenrment & we rely on tax dollars to pay for everything, we have not had a raise in the last 3 or 4 years with economy being what it is. In 2011, we received a small one time bonus based on the number of hours we work but we haven’t heard yet if that will be the case in 2012. Our reviews are in March so we should know soon.
We also have not rehired for certain positions when people have left so many of us are doing more than 1 job. Also about 3 years ago, they did have to RIF a number of people.. A few of those position have been filled again but this is rare.
