Plenty of employers vigorously enforce their work rules when employees break them. But not every employee deserves exactly the same punishment if there are differences in their conduct. That’s why it’s important to document every detail.
Recent case: The Philadelphia Parking Authority fired Maria Cange, who is of Haitian national origin, when surveillance video showed her sleeping on the job. She sued, alleging that two other employees who were not Haitian weren’t terminated for similar offenses.
The authority explained that one employee was napping while on a break. The other wasn’t terminated because the video was too blurry to determine if he was sleeping.
