A growing problem: Obese workers cost Texas employers $3 billion

In 2005, obesity cost Texas employers approximately $3.3 billion, including direct health care costs and related costs for employee absenteeism, lost productivity and disability, according to a report issued by Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

The report, titled “Counting Costs and Calories,” says employers are enmeshed in these issues “because businesses bear the majority of the costs associated with obesity.” The report found that more than 60 percent of Texans are overweight or obese—a figure that has risen by almost 50 percent since 1990.

It predicts that the costs associated with obesity could reach $15.8 billion by 2025.

The report was based on a survey of 30 companies that answered questions about their health care costs.
