With help from lawyers at Lambda Legal, which works to protect the legal rights of gay employees, a former temporary professor is suing Tarrant County College (TCC), alleging that officials blocked her bid for a full-time professorship because she is a lesbian.
Jacqueline Gill began teaching literature at TCC’s Northeast Campus in Hurst in 2009.
Despite winning accolades from colleagues and superiors, Gill contends she was the only contract teacher in the English Department who wasn’t invited to interview for a permanent status position the following spring.
The problem, Gill believes: Bias against her sexual orientation after a disgruntled student falsely claimed she had been flirting with female students in class.
Gill’s lawsuit claims she was subjected to anti-homosexual diatribes by the English Department chair.
She also alleges that TCC’s dean of humanities violated the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution by refusing to permit her to interview for a permanent position based on his perception that Gill is a lesbian.
