Tidbits on tattlers: A new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) says the IRS needs to improve the efficiency of the whistle-blower program. (GAO-11-683)

The program rewards certain tipsters who turn in tax cheats. Significantly, the GAO says the IRS must do a better job of managing claims. Based on the report, more than 1,300 whistle-blower claims have been filed since 2007, alleging fraud against 9,540 taxpayers. But the IRS is still investigating 8,254—more than 86%—of those taxpayers.
