IRS testing tax preparers

More details are available on new competency tests required for tax return preparers who aren’t CPAs, attorneys or enrolled agents. Testing will begin this year, but preparers will have until the end of 2013 to pass the test.

The exams, which will be administered at 260 centers nationwide, will feature approximately 120 questions of the true/false and multiple-choice variety. It will be an open-book test in which participants will be given copies of IRS Pub. 17, Form 1040 and the instructions.
