Security guards at Pittsburgh’s new Rivers Casino rejected an organizing bid by the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA) union. In a close vote, the guards rejected unionization 38-35.
The vote doesn’t necessarily mean the casino will be a nonunion workplace. The United Steelworkers are attempting to organize the entire workforce of more than 800 employees. The guards could come under the Steelworkers’ umbrella depending on how events unfold at the new facility.
Rejecting the SPFPA bid could have just been a gamble as the guards wait to see what’s in the cards for the future.
