Workers at nine Philadelphia area hospitals have filed a class-action overtime lawsuit claiming the hospitals’ practice of automatically deducting lunch periods deprives them of overtime pay.

The workers claim they often don’t get a full lunch break because emergencies or other pressing matters force them back to work before the break is over. But the hospitals’ time clock systems automatically deduct a standard lunch break whether an employee takes a complete break or not.

The result, the workers claim, is that they often work overtime without getting paid for it.
