Has staring at your monitor for hours left you bleary-eyed?
Give your eye muscles a break throughout the day with these exercises:
1. The full rotation: Close your eyes and rotate them up, as if you’re looking into the back of your forehead. Hold for a count of five. Then slowly rotate them all the way down. Hold for five. Do the same thing to the left and to the right. Then do diagonal crosses. You can also do it with eyes open.
2. Near and far: Sit at a window or in your car. Place your hand in front of your eyes so you can see it without double vision. Focus on the tips of your fingers, then shift your focus so you’re looking as far away as you can in the distance. Repeat 10 to 15 times.
3. Cupping: Rub your palms together to generate heat. Keeping your eyes open, cup your palms and rest your hands on the bones around your eyes so that they’re completely covered. You should feel no pressure on your eyes. Block out all the light and let the darkness soothe your eyes.
Bonus: If you suffer from frequent headaches, working to rid yourself of eye strain can offer relief. According to Dr. Anwarul Ha of the Dallas Headache Association, removing potential causes of headaches, such as eye strain and stress, is ultimately more effective than taking pain relievers.
