Misty May already was a volleyball legend in the early 1990s when Kerri Walsh, a high school rival, asked for her autograph.

In 2001, the two became partners in beach volleyball and this past August were the first team in Olympic history to win back-to-back gold medals in the sport. By the time they went to the Olympics in China, they had a 108-match winning streak and didn’t lose a single match or set in either the 2004 or 2008 games.

“Kerri and I have the mindset that we will win,” May told a magazine. She also said they hate to lose, although they don’t think about that while they’re playing.

Other winning May traits: 

  • She always looks for something to get better at.
  • She asks experts for advice … and listens.
  • She’s tenacious, not letting a few flubs or even a match throw her off.

But the main driver for May and Walsh: winning. Their goal: Be the best.
