Back in days of yore when Delphi was set free from General Motors, it kept a promise GM had made to salaried white-collar workers: They would have free life and health insurance for the rest of their days.
But lately the gods have smiled neither on GM nor its parts-manufacturing offspring. Laboring under the curse of the current economy, the now-bankrupt Delphi moved to discontinue the promised benefits.
The suddenly uninsured, in their woe, appealed to the bankruptcy judge to honor the age-old promise. Alas, their request was denied. Delphi dropped coverage effective April 1.
The retirees plan to present their lamentations in other judicial venues, but success is not predicted.
