Are you dialing up the IRS for last-minute tax assistance? Don't expect to get a fast answer. The Treasury Inspector General (TIG) says phone lines have been jammed throughout the early part of the 2008 tax return filing season, with callers waiting on hold for about 10 minutes on average.
Other taxpayers have received busy signals or pre-recorded messages asking them to call back another time. The TIG expects the IRS to field about 9 million more calls this year than it did last year. Much of the confusion relates to the economic stimulus rebates that were handed out last year.
Undoubtedly, questions about the new recovery law that was signed Feb. 17, 2009, will only add to the waiting time.
