David F. D’Alessandro, former chairman and CEO of John Hancock Financial Services, knows that simple things, like respect for employees’ lives outside the office, make a difference. D’Alessandro once flew back and forth across the country in one day to attend the funeral of his employee’s son.

“My employee never forgot that,” he says. “And when the company was having some problems and I really needed him, he was a champ for me, absolutely remarkable.”

Extraordinary gestures aside, just taking a marked interest in your employees’ aspirations and helping them get there can be the difference between average and exemplary performance.
