What makes people happy?
a) Genetics. They’re born with a sunny disposition.
b) Their jobs and circumstances.
c) Choice. They choose to see the glass as half full.
Answer: All of the above. What most people don’t realize, though, is that their happiness depends 40% on the way they choose to see things, says Dan Baker, author of What Happy People Know.
Here’s a three-part prescription to “rewire” yourself for happiness, Baker tells the Los Angeles Times. For the next week, do these things daily:
1. Think of someone every morning that you deeply appreciate. Do the same before lunch. And at bedtime, think of something that occurred that day that you appreciate.
2. Do something for someone. Help a friend who needs you. Give a toy to charity.
3. Curb your negative self-talk. When thinking of a forthcoming event, such as the extended family gathering for the holidays, focus on the upside, not the hassles. What potential good could emerge from it?
