Verify workers’ immigrant status. Employers must ask new hires for documents verifying their employment eligibility. But employees can show any of 29 different documents to prove their immigrant work status. This makes forgeries hard to spot. Starting late this year, the Immigration and Naturalization Service will cut the number of valid IDs to about six, and the INS will issue forgery-resistant green cards.
