What to say when …

in Office Management

You’re tired of hearing a colleague insult your boss and other co-workers:

“You have a right to your opinion. But I’d appreciate if you would stop lashing out at some of the folks who we work with. It makes me uncomfortable.”

An executive gives you poor advice so you quietly reject it. But the executive follows up, asking, “Did you take my advice?”

“I gave it a lot of thought. I ended up not taking that route, but it got me to think of some new ideas that helped me. Having your input was good.”

A vendor complains about how hard it is to work with your demanding and sometimes nasty boss:

“Well, we have to work with everybody. Have you taken any steps to improve the relationship?”
