Ask ideal questions

Before you scold an employee, try posing an ideal question in which you let the employee ponder how to do better. Examples: “What would you have to do to increase your sales by 20 percent?” or, “Ideally, how would you approach this project to produce the best results?” The answer you get may save you from having to criticize.
