Q. My boss lied to me. I wanted to be named team leader, but he said, “Oh, too bad, I already chose someone else.” I later learned he hadn’t selected that person until the last minute, after I spoke with him. What a spineless worm! Should I confront him?

A. No. While spineless, that’s still a pretty mild lie. Don’t blow it out of proportion. Instead, ask the boss how you can become team leader next time. Seek his advice in a friendly, nonthreatening way. If he makes any promises or commitments, write them down and hold him accountable.
