Some employees love to “borrow” everything from pens and scissors to start-up software CD-ROMs. They freely raid your desk to take whatever they need—and don’t return it. Manage “moochaholics” by first giving them a friendly warning (“Please return what you take”) or getting them their own supplies. If that doesn’t work, quantify your cost in lost time after you track down missing items. Say, “I use my highlighter to read reports, and hunting it down from you took 10 minutes. I also missed an important call. Please ask me before you take stuff from my office.”
