Q I’m supposed to train my replacement to do some technical aspects of my job. I try to be patient, but this person just doesn’t get it. What am I doing wrong?

A You’re probably so familiar with your job that you might be rushing and piling on too much information at once. It may all seem simple to you, but it may strike a newcomer as confusing or difficult. Monitor how much time you spend explaining processes. If you’re presenting multiple steps at once, break the learning into shorter chunks punctuated by breaks. This lets the person assimilate what you’ve taught, and practice. Then allow questions that lead you to introduce the next step.
