Maximize new employees’ first month by easing them into group activities. Help them feel like accepted team members by treating them equally in meetings (for instance, no “observer” status). Also show that what they say counts: Solicit their thoughts and follow their suggestions. Finally, find at least three reasons to praise them in their first few weeks. If they think they’re off to a good start, they’ll gain enthusiasm for the job.
