Q Our CEO asked all employees to bring in more business. We’re supposed to turn our friends and family into customers. I’m a supervisor, not a saleswoman. Now my colleagues are gathering lots of referrals and I’m not. That makes me look bad. What should I do?

A Examine why you prefer not to ask for referrals. Are you ashamed of your company? Do you consider its product or service defective? Or are you simply uncomfortable shifting into referral mode? If you don’t believe in your company, maybe you should work elsewhere. But if you’re just bashful about asking for business, at least give it a try. It does get easier with practice.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the CEO’s request. Turning every employee into a salesperson makes sense and can build pride.
