If your employer’s layoffs and reorganizations leave you balancing two or even three jobs, don’t just grin and bear it.

Tell your boss you’ll give everything you’ve got for the good of the team. In exchange, extract clear short- and long-term promises that specify what you’ll get in return.

Examples: new mentors to give you direction, pay increases, exposure to new, higher-level duties. Unless you negotiate boldly to ensure that you’re treated fairly, accepting a crushing burden won’t help you advance.

Tip: You’ll wield more control by confirming two things: 1) that the big picture of what’s going on in your company complements your career trajectory, and 2) that what you want to happen actually does happen.
