Q I made copies of my résumé at the office, and I left the original where my boss found it. Now she’s doubly annoyed that I used the copier for personal business and I’m looking to quit. Actually, I was just updating my résumé. Can I dig myself out of this?
A Maybe, maybe not. It depends what kind of relationship you’ve built with your boss. Tell the truth, of course: Explain that you’re happy now and you’re not applying for jobs. But it may take awhile to repair the damage, so bend over backward to excel in the months ahead. And let this be a lesson: Never use company copiers (or e-mail or fax machines) to conduct private business.
