When you prepare to negotiate your salary for a new job, never introduce the subject of pay. Wait for the interviewer to talk money. When the interviewer finally brings up pay, don’t start dishing out specifics. Say, “I’m open to hearing any reasonable offer,” or, “I would hope we could reach an agreement.” Resist revealing your current pay. Brush off such requests by saying “My salary history isn’t the driving factor in my thinking about this job.”
After you finally hear an offer, repeat the figure and be quiet. Some interviewers may interpret your silence as disappointment with the initial offer and immediately raise it.
