Consider a Yale University study with three groups of students, each given a lecture on dental hygiene. Group 1 heard a lecture dwelling on gum disease and tooth decay. Group 2 heard a similar but slightly toned down lecture. Group 3’s lecture barely covered neglect. It focused on the benefits of dental hygiene.

A week later, most Group 3 listeners were applying the advice, but those in the other two groups were not.
