An employee says, “Stop nagging, it’ll get done,” but you’re still concerned it won’t:

“I don’t like being nagged, either. And I don’t want to nag. It’s just that the stakes are so high, I need reassurance that you’ll get it done in our time frame.”

An employee who’s contagious with flu calls to say she’s coming in anyway:

“I admire your dedication, and if this were a real crisis I’d probably say it’s great. But right now I’d prefer that you stay home and recover. We need you back to 100 percent and we can’t risk spreading the flu bug around here.”

Your boss makes cynical cracks about your inability to work faster:

“I’m not going to win any races around here, but I’ll pit my low error rate, quality of work and productivity against anybody’s.”
