Talk about bad manners!

Q:  I took an employee to lunch to discuss a delicate personnel matter. He was slurping his soup like a child, and it distracted me. I got a little angry. But I didn’t say anything. Should I have?

A:  It depends on your relationship with him. If you have a good rapport, you can laugh and say, “I’ll wait for you to finish your soup!” But if you’re not that chummy, let it go. Unless you’re grooming the person to serve as your emissary, his soup-slurping shouldn’t undermine his job performance. He may not appreciate being criticized for his table manners.
