Measure your managers’ sense of duty

Want to gauge the commitment of your top managers? Ask them to e-mail you within a week the three most important steps you can take to improve the unit’s performance and the three things each of them can do. If only a few of them send their e-mails before the deadline, that’s a bad sign. And it’s even more worrisome if they dwell on what you need to do rather than what they need to do. Ideally, all of them should promptly complete the assignment and volunteer to implement their best ideas.
