Sacrifice. Act selflessly for the benefit of your employees. Examples: Help jump-start a staffer’s car in a blizzard; delegate your favorite task to someone who covets the same assignment.
Stimulate. Provoke workers to think in new, exciting ways about their jobs. How? Dangle rewards for exceptional effort. Ask customers to meet with your employees and share their ideas and observations. Announce some ambitious or record-setting goals.
Seek. Dignify even the lowliest employee by asking for advice. Cast yourself as a student who’s hungry to learn. This boosts the self-esteem of your team and causes them to view you as a leader, not an order-giver.
