When a boss promises to give you a raise or promotion at some future time, don’t just nod, walk away and wait for your big day. Write a memo that summarizes what the boss promised to do, along with a timetable for action. Also include any commitments that you made, so that the “deal” is clearly and unambiguously captured in print. This holds both parties accountable for keeping their word.
