Leaders can say a lot about how much they value their people by undertaking some physical act of labor.

It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, either. In fact, performing a humble duty says a lot more about the worth of every employee than any kind of grand posturing.

Two examples:
  • James Dyson, founder of the Dyson vacuum-cleaner company, required all new employees, no matter what level or salary, to build a new vacuum cleaner themselves. They then had the option of buying it for 5 British pounds.
  • Edward Guinness, head of Guinness brewers, spent his first day on the job in overalls and Wellington boots, mucking out huge beer vats.
